Alcorn takes down Prairie View, 90-78

Davey L. Whitney Complex erupted in the final seconds of the Alcorn State University men’s basketball game against Prairie View A&M University as Kevin Firle drained a free throw basket to set the final score at 90-78.

    The Braves (3-15, 2-3 SWAC) controlled much of the game and garnered their biggest lead of 26 points with 10:36 left in the second half. ASU outscored the Panthers in points off turnovers, 16-13, and in the paint, 42-38.

    Five Braves were in the double digits on the Jeremiah Gambrellput up 20 points in the win and recorded two rebounds for Alcorn. Byron Joshua added 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Jeremiah Kendall scored 14 points and tallied six rebounds and three assists. Jalen Hawkins also scored 14 points and had four rebounds. Stephen Byard contributed 12 points and four rebounds.

    As a team, Alcorn went 64.6 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from the line.

    Prairie View A&M (7-11, 2-3 SWAC) was led by Brian Myles with 19 points and four rebounds. He was followed by Charles Smith, IV with 19 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Javontae Hopkins contributed 13 points and six rebounds. Nick Gazelas added 10 points while Orlando Horton, Jr. with 10 points and five assists.

Collectively, PVAMU went 50 percent from the field and 60.9 percent from the line.
